“We’re sorry that we couldn’t bring back something,” Marcia said. “It would have helped both of us.”

“I keep hoping,” Alice said. “Parents are like that.”

Marcia drove away from the house. “She used us.”

“She did, but it was for a good cause. She thought maybe we could trip a synapse here and there, and he would have a memory again.”

“It must be hell, living like that. No memories, no recognition. As if you had never lived.”

“He knows he went to high school. He knows that he played sports.”

“He knows there was no algebra team.”

Neither sister said anything for a minute.

“If that happens to me,” Margo said. “If I get to the point where I don’t know you…”

“Same for me,” Marcia answered. “Just do it in a way that won’t get you in trouble.”

  “Ditto. You would hate prison.”

They bumped fists as Marcia looked into the mirror.

  “Company,” Marcia said.

  “Who?”

  “Sheriff.”

  Marcia pulled to the side.

  “Were you speeding?”

“Nope. I have to think it’s harassment.”

  “We’ll deal with it.”

Marcia rolled down the window as Sheriff Wallace stepped up. She noted a deputy on the other side.

“What’s the problem, sheriff?” Marcia asked.

“Margo Fleming, would you please step out of the car.”

  “Why?” Marcia asked.

  “Ms. Fleming, please get out.”

“Look,” Marcia said and started to open the door.

“Stay in the vehicle,” the Sheriff ordered. “Ms. Fleming.”

“I’ll be fine,” Margo said. “Follow us back to the station, so I don’t have to use my one call on you.”

Margo climbed out of the vehicle, and the deputy held up his cuffs. Margo put her hands behind her back, and the cuffs clicked in place.

“You can’t just take her,” Marcia said, her voice rising in anger. “You need to charge her with something!”

“Oh, we’re charging her,” the sheriff said. “We’re arresting your sister for the murder of Donna O’Brien.”

  Dear reader,

That was a shocking scene, wasn’t it?
